Murfreesboro, TN
Cultural Arts Photography Laureate Project 2017-2018

Through the theme of contrast, I chose to explore crucial and timely issues facing specifically our community and, by extension, our country. I’ve used double exposure to juxtapose youth with local events and landmarks in an attempt to examine the choices we ultimately communicate to them. Do our actions uphold what we believe about how we value our environment, equality, inclusion, and diversity? Often the answer is complicated and incomplete. Through this series, I hope to suggest to viewers that if we feel uncomfortable viewing these images or inadequate explaining these issues to our children, perhaps they warrant further consideration.
Each participant in the series, and their families, have inspired me to a larger understanding of the issues facing our community. The events each took place during my year as laureate. The locations in Murfreesboro were chosen for their complex symbolic meaning about our overarching community values.
